Why Candidates Choose PTE
- It is fully computer-based, including the Speaking section, so there is no face-to-face interview.
- Results usually come back far faster than other English tests, which matters when an application deadline is close.
- Scoring is automated, so it is consistent and not affected by an examiner's judgement on the day.
- It is accepted for study and migration purposes by Australia, New Zealand, the UK and many other countries — check that your own university or immigration authority accepts it before booking.
PTE Academic Test Format
PTE Academic takes about two hours and is taken in one sitting at a test centre, on a computer. There are three parts, taken in a fixed order, with 22 question types in total.
| Part | Time | Question types | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1: Speaking and Writing | 76–84 minutes | 9 | 35–43 |
| Part 2: Reading | 23–30 minutes | 5 | 15–20 |
| Part 3: Listening | 31–39 minutes | 8 | 15–22 |
You receive an overall score and four communicative skill scores — Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing — each on a scale from 10 to 90, based on the Global Scale of English.
| Many PTE question types are scored across more than one skill. Repeat Sentence counts towards both Listening and Speaking; Summarize Written Text towards Reading and Writing; Write from Dictation towards Listening and Writing. This is why preparing one skill in isolation rarely moves the overall score. |

How to Prepare
- Learn the 22 question types by name. PTE rewards knowing exactly what each task wants, and the questions arrive in a fixed order.
- Practise on a computer with a headset, not on paper. Speaking responses are recorded and scored by machine, and microphone technique affects your score.
- Speak immediately when the recording starts and do not stop mid-answer — long pauses cost marks in several Speaking tasks.
- Give extra time to Write from Dictation and Repeat Sentence. They are short tasks that feed several skill scores at once.
- Work on pace and clarity rather than accent. The scoring listens for fluency and pronunciation, not for sounding British or Australian.
- Take full mock tests under timed conditions. A two-hour computer-based test is as much about concentration as about English.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the PTE Academic test?
About two hours, taken in one sitting on a computer at a test centre. It has three parts in a fixed order: Speaking and Writing (76–84 minutes), Reading (23–30 minutes) and Listening (31–39 minutes).
How is PTE scored?
You get an overall score and four skill scores — Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing — each from 10 to 90, based on the Global Scale of English. Scoring is automated. Many question types count towards more than one skill, so weakness in one task can pull down two scores at once.
Is the course live or self-paced?
Self-paced and fully online, for NPR 5,000. You study whenever suits you and most candidates complete it in four to six weeks. We do not run live or classroom PTE classes.
Are mock tests included in the course fee?
No. PTE mock tests are sold separately at NPR 3,500 and can be taken whether or not you have taken the course.
Should I take PTE or IELTS?
PTE is fully computer-based with automated scoring and faster results, which suits candidates who are comfortable with a computer and need results quickly. IELTS has a face-to-face Speaking interview and is more widely accepted. The deciding factor is what your university, employer or immigration authority accepts — check that first, since not every organisation accepts both.
Where can I take the PTE test?
PTE Academic is taken at an approved test centre on a computer. Centres and available dates change, so check the official PTE website when you are ready to book.
