Conquering the IELTS Academic: Your Roadmap to Success

Conquering the IELTS Academic: Your Roadmap to Success

The IELTS Academic test assesses English proficiency across four modules. Here's a complete breakdown of each section, scoring, and proven preparation strategies.

What is IELTS Academic?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic is the world's most widely taken English proficiency exam. Accepted by universities, professional bodies, and immigration authorities in over 140 countries, IELTS Academic is required by many Nepali students and professionals seeking to study or work abroad.

The Academic version is specifically designed for those seeking higher education entry or professional registration — distinct from IELTS General Training, which is used for secondary education and migration applications.

Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer)

The Listening module has four sections. Sections 1–2 focus on social and everyday contexts; Sections 3–4 focus on academic and educational settings. You listen to recordings and answer questions — form completion, multiple choice, matching, sentence completion, and map/diagram labelling.

Scores are based on the number of correct answers out of 40. An overall Band 7 requires approximately 30 correct answers. Remember: spelling counts in this module, so accurate transcription is critical.

Reading (60 minutes)

The Reading module contains three long texts taken from academic books, journals, and magazines. With 40 questions in 60 minutes, time management is the biggest challenge. Question types include: True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, Matching Information, Short Answer, and Summary Completion.

True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given questions trip up many candidates because NOT GIVEN means the text provides no information — not that the statement is wrong. Understanding this distinction is essential for a high Reading score.

Writing (60 minutes)

Task 1 (20 minutes, minimum 150 words) asks you to describe visual data — a graph, chart, table, map, or diagram. Task 2 (40 minutes, minimum 250 words) is an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem. Task 2 carries twice the marks of Task 1.

IELTS Writing is assessed on four criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. A Band 7 requires competence in all four areas. Many Nepali candidates underperform in Lexical Resource — using a wider, more precise vocabulary is the fastest way to lift your Writing score.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)

The Speaking module is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. Part 1 covers familiar topics (family, hobbies, daily life). Part 2 is a 2-minute monologue on a topic given by the examiner. Part 3 is a discussion of abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic.

Speaking is assessed on Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Many candidates fear the Speaking test most but, with regular practice, it is also the quickest to improve — especially with structured feedback from an experienced coach.
