TruMerit CVS-NCNZ Credentials Verification Process for New Zealand Nursing Registration

TruMerit CVS-NCNZ Credentials Verification Process for New Zealand Nursing Registration

For nurses trained outside New Zealand, registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand begins with a mandatory credentials check run by TruMerit, formerly CGFNS International.

What is TruMerit (Formerly CGFNS)?

TruMerit, formerly known as CGFNS International, is a non-profit organisation that verifies the nursing credentials of internationally educated nurses (IENs) for regulatory bodies worldwide. For nurses seeking registration in New Zealand, TruMerit conducts the Credentials Verification Service for NCNZ (CVS-NCNZ) on behalf of the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ).

The CVS-NCNZ is a mandatory first step for most internationally educated nurses applying for New Zealand registration. TruMerit independently verifies your nursing education, training, and registration documents — ensuring authenticity and equivalence with New Zealand standards before your application reaches the NCNZ.

Who Needs the CVS-NCNZ?

All internationally educated nurses applying for New Zealand registration who were trained outside Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, or the USA are required to complete the CVS-NCNZ process. Nepali nurses fall into this category and must complete TruMerit verification before the NCNZ will process their registration application.

To be eligible, you must have completed a nursing programme of at least three years duration and have a minimum of 1,800 hours of post-registration nursing practice (clinical experience after your initial registration). Verify your eligibility on the NCNZ website before initiating the TruMerit process.

The 8-Step CVS-NCNZ Process

Step 1 — Create your TruMerit account at the TruMerit online portal and begin your CVS-NCNZ application. Step 2 — Pay the initial application fee (approximately USD 380 for the base CVS-NCNZ service). Additional fees may apply for document translation or extra verification services.

Step 3 — Request official transcripts from your nursing college or university to be sent directly from the institution to TruMerit. Step 4 — Request a Certificate of Current Professional Status (CCPS) from the Nepal Nursing Council and have it sent directly to TruMerit. Step 5 — Submit your identity documents (passport), degree certificate, and registration certificate through the TruMerit portal.

Continuing the Verification Steps

Step 6 — TruMerit contacts your nursing college and the Nepal Nursing Council to independently verify the authenticity of your documents. This verification process can take several months, depending on how quickly your institution and regulatory body respond.

Step 7 — Once TruMerit completes its verification, it produces a CVS report and sends it directly to the NCNZ. Step 8 — The NCNZ reviews your CVS report alongside your registration application and determines whether your qualifications meet New Zealand nursing standards. If your qualifications are deemed equivalent, you proceed to the English language and competence assessment stages.

English Language Requirements

The NCNZ requires proof of English proficiency. For nurses applying through the standard registration pathway, the requirements are: OET with a minimum score of 350 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and a minimum of 300 in Writing. Alternatively, IELTS Academic with a minimum of 7.0 overall and no band below 6.5 is accepted.

OET is widely recommended for healthcare professionals because the content is directly relevant to clinical nursing practice. LIFE Academy is the only OET-certified preparation centre in Chitwan and can help you achieve the required scores efficiently.

After TruMerit: NCNZ Competence Assessment

Once the NCNZ has your CVS report and confirms your qualifications are equivalent, you may be required to complete a Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) — a period of supervised practice in a New Zealand healthcare setting — before being granted full registration. The NCNZ will advise you whether a CAP is required based on your individual assessment.

The full New Zealand registration journey typically takes 12 to 18 months from the time you initiate the TruMerit process. Planning ahead, preparing your English language test early, and ensuring all documents are in order from the outset can significantly reduce delays.
