Applying to New Zealand as a Registered Nurse

Applying to New Zealand as a Registered Nurse

Nepali nurses can migrate to New Zealand by registering with NCNZ and leveraging the Green List fast-track residency pathway. A step-by-step guide covering costs, visas, and timelines.

Why New Zealand?

New Zealand's healthcare system faces a significant nursing shortage, and the government has actively created pathways to attract internationally qualified nurses. For Nepali nurses, New Zealand offers excellent salaries, a high quality of life, a pathway to permanent residency, and a welcoming multicultural environment.

Registered Nurse is on New Zealand's Green List — Tier 1 (straight to residence pathway) or Tier 2 (work to residence pathway), depending on your specialism and experience. This makes nursing one of the most favourable occupations for Nepali migrants.

Step 1 — Register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)

The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) is the regulatory body for nursing in New Zealand. To register, you must demonstrate that your qualifications and competencies are equivalent to a New Zealand-trained nurse. The NCNZ will assess your application and may require you to complete additional competency assessments or supervised practice if gaps are identified.

Required documents typically include: degree certificate and transcripts, proof of registration from the Nepal Nursing Council, evidence of recent nursing practice, references, identity documents, and English language results. The NCNZ charges an application fee — check the NCNZ website for current fees as these change periodically.

Step 2 — Meet English Language Requirements

The NCNZ requires evidence of English language proficiency. Accepted tests include: IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 overall, no band below 7.0), OET (minimum Grade B in all four sub-tests), or PTE Academic (minimum 65, no communicative skill below 65). Results must be within the last two years at the time of application.

OET is increasingly favoured by healthcare professionals because it is set in medical contexts — making preparation more directly relevant to your daily work. LIFE Academy offers OET preparation in Bharatpur.

Step 3 — Find Employment in New Zealand

Most Nepali nurses secure a job offer before moving to New Zealand. New Zealand's DHBs (District Health Boards, now integrated into Te Whatu Ora) and private hospitals recruit internationally. Online platforms such as Seek NZ, Trade Me Jobs, and Kiwi Health Jobs are useful starting points.

Once you have a job offer, your employer will typically assist with your visa application. A job offer also strengthens your case for skilled migrant visa pathways.

Step 4 — Apply for Your Visa

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is the primary route for internationally qualified nurses moving to New Zealand. Your employer must be an accredited employer under Immigration New Zealand's scheme. Once employed, you may be eligible to apply for the Green List straight-to-residence visa or the work-to-residence pathway, depending on your circumstances.

Immigration New Zealand's website contains the most current visa requirements and fee schedules. Timelines for processing vary — allow several months for work visa processing and longer for residence applications.
