Mastering the OSCE: Your Practical Guide to UK Nursing Registration

The OSCE is Part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence. Understand the 10-station structure, the five approved UK test centres, fees, and how to prepare effectively.

What is the OSCE?

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is Part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence. Unlike the written CBT, the OSCE assesses your clinical skills in a simulated hospital environment. You must complete Part 1 (the CBT) before you can sit the OSCE.

The OSCE must be taken in the UK. It is conducted at approved test centres run by NHS trusts and universities. There are currently five approved centres, located in England and Scotland.

The 10-Station Structure

The OSCE consists of 10 stations, each lasting approximately 10 minutes. Stations test a range of clinical skills including: patient assessment, medicines management, vital signs monitoring, wound care, communication and patient education, infection prevention and control, and professional values and behaviours.

At each station you are given a brief scenario and must demonstrate the required skill to an assessor. You are assessed on both your clinical competence and your communication with the simulated patient and other team members.

Fees and Logistics

The OSCE fee is currently £794. This covers your examination at one of the five approved centres. You will also need to arrange travel and accommodation in the UK, as the OSCE cannot be sat outside the UK.

Waiting times for OSCE slots vary — in periods of high demand, nurses may wait several months for a place. It is important to apply for your OSCE slot as soon as you have passed the CBT to minimise delays in your registration timeline.

How to Prepare

Preparation for the OSCE requires hands-on clinical practice. In Nepal, this means practising the specific procedures tested in the OSCE using simulation or practice with colleagues and mentors. Focus particularly on procedures you may have performed differently in Nepal — UK clinical practice has specific protocols that assessors will be checking.

Communication is equally important. Practise introducing yourself clearly, explaining procedures to patients, obtaining consent, and documenting your actions. The OSCE is not just a clinical skills test — it is a holistic assessment of safe, compassionate, UK-standard nursing practice.

LIFE Academy's OSCE Support

LIFE Academy provides OSCE orientation sessions to help nurses understand what to expect at each station and how to align their practice with UK standards. We cover the communication frameworks used in UK nursing, patient-centred care principles, and the specific procedures most commonly assessed.

Contact LIFE Academy to find out more about our NMC registration support programme, which covers both the CBT and OSCE preparation stages.
