To work as a Registered Nurse in Australia, you must complete AHPRA's Outcome-Based Assessment. Here's what Nepali nurses need to know about NCLEX, OSCE, and visa options.
Australia's healthcare system is actively recruiting internationally trained nurses. Registered Nursing is on Australia's Skills in Demand list, making it one of the most straightforward professions for skilled migration. For Nepali nurses, Australia offers excellent pay, strong employment rights, and a clear pathway to permanent residency.
The registration process is managed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The current assessment pathway for internationally qualified nurses is called the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA).
Submit your application to AHPRA for an assessment of your qualifications and competencies. You will need to provide: your degree certificate and transcripts verified by a NOOSR-approved authority, proof of current registration from the Nepal Nursing Council, a Certificate of Currency of Registration, a Declaration of Health, and a Criminal History check.
AHPRA's processing times can be several months. Once your application is assessed, you will receive an outcome letter indicating whether you can proceed and what components of the OBA you need to complete.
The OBA replaced the previous bridging programme system. Most internationally qualified nurses are required to complete the OBA, which includes both a written assessment (NCLEX-RN style computer-adaptive test) and a clinical assessment (OSCE).
The written assessment is conducted via Pearson VUE. The OSCE is conducted at approved assessment centres in Australia and tests your clinical skills in simulated patient care scenarios. Both components must be passed before AHPRA can grant registration.
AHPRA requires evidence of English language proficiency. Accepted tests include OET (minimum Grade B in all four sub-tests) or IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 overall, no band below 7.0). Results must generally be within the last three years.
OET is highly recommended for nurses applying to Australia because the test is set in healthcare contexts, the results are valid for three years, and Grade B aligns directly with AHPRA's minimum standard.
The primary visa for nurses migrating to Australia is the Employer-Sponsored visa (subclass 482 — Temporary Skill Shortage) or the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) for those with enough points. State-nominated visas (subclass 190 and 491) are also popular routes — many Australian states actively nominate nurses.
To accumulate points for a skilled migration visa, you are assessed on factors including age, English proficiency, qualifications, and years of skilled work experience. Consulting a registered migration agent in Australia can help you identify the strongest visa pathway for your circumstances.
